Why see a periodontist?

A periodontist is a specialist dentist, who is an expert in treating conditions of the gums and placing dental implants. Your dentist will refer you to a periodontist when complex treatment for gum conditions and dental implants are required.

What will happen at my first visit?

The first visit is designed to get to know you and chart the periodontal condition to determine its nature and extent. Often radiographs are required and a diagnosis and plan of treatment are established. Unless there is an emergency, treatment will begin on your next visit. We also take care to fully inform you of the costs of future visits and procedures.

What is gum disease?

The most common gum disease is gingivitis which can lead to a more destructive periodontitis and loose teeth. However in most cases if you commence gum disease treatment early enough, periodontal disease can be avoided.

How can it be treated?

Treatment varies but a common pattern is to manage any general health factors, debride tooth roots of plaque and tartar, improve daily home cleaning practices and the use of antibiotics.

What is an implant?

It is a titanium screw which is planted in the jawbone to support a new tooth or bridge or denture. This is the foundation for your dentist to build a new tooth to replace missing or failing teeth.

Does it last forever?

Nothing lasts forever but the success rate is high. Studies have shown a success of 95% at one year and 86% at twenty years.

What should I do if I am concerned about postoperative issues?

What to expect in the postoperative period will be discussed prior to surgery and you are encouraged to make contact post operatively with any queries or concerns.

How do I pay?

All normal payment facilities are available such as EFTPOS and credit card. In addition, on the spot health insurance claims are routine through the HICAPS facility at our reception desk.

Is my visit covered by my health insurance?

There are many different health funds, all with different levels of cover. Item numbers for services can be provided should you wish to check with your individual fund prior to your visit.

How do I keep my teeth and gums healthy between visits?

The common approach is to maintain good general health (e.g. healthy diet, well controlled diabetes, quit smoking, maintain Vitamin D levels in normal range) and to carry out good daily cleaning, including interdental cleaning aids every single day.

How often should I see my periodontist?

This varies but a common pattern is 4–6 monthly, once the condition is stable and the initial treatment is complete. We are aiming to share your periodontal maintenance care with your general dental practitioner/hygienist.
